Occupy Oakland: Dock Strike

Contrary to popular media's portrayal, the port blockade in Oakland on December 12 was not only very well attended, with a diverse crowd including families with kids and people of all shapes/colors/sizes, but it was super fun.  The videos below are not very representative of the gigantic crowds, which were closer to the center of the demonstration, but they do show us rocking out hard.  There were no problems with police.  From what I could tell it was all peaceful, civil, and it successfully managed to shut down the dock for a full 24 hours. High 5, Oakland.

Occupy International - free compilation

Occupy International is both the title of a freely downloadable music compilation and a worldwide conceptual movement.  Featuring an array of artists from the US, Belgium, Chile, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, the 24-track compilation runs the gamut from hip hop to dubstep, with a little punk rock thrown in for good measure.  The "Occupy International" concept itself is simply the idea of spreading the sentiment behind the Occupy Wall Street protests to an international level, a movement which has already begun in places such as Belgium, Germany, Poland and Spain.

Birthed by producer/musician Jonah Mociun (AKA Th' Mole) of the Magical Bass blog and record label, "Occupy International" was originally just a two-word concept which quickly manifested itself in the idea to create a music compilation.  Primarily by using Facebook, Mociun contacted the artists directly, all of them agreeing to contribute tracks free of charge.  Popular artists such as Dead Prez responded surprisingly quickly.  Along with art by Bay Area-based Ezra Li Eismont and mastering by one of the contributing musicians, Bloodysnowman, the project apparently came together with ease, spurred by the momentum of the cause.

While the music on Occupy International ranges widely, including political artists as well as non-political ones, for the most part it is energetic, with lyrics relevant to the OWS movement.  While a few contributions, such as Blondtron's cover of "Wolf Like Me" by TV On The Radio, are not exactly protest music, most of the tracks, including Riddlore?'s "State Of The Nation" and Mochipet's Rage Against The Machine remix, are the perfect soundtrack for standing up and taking to the streets.  In the especially poignant track "I Think I'm Ben Bernanke" rapper Sole states, "We've been under occupation.  Time to occupy the occupiers."

Pretty Boy Swag

Why do I love Soulja Boy so much?  I don't know.  He really sucks at rapping, and most of his songs I throw away, but some of his songs just make me want to jump up and kiss the sky.  I think this is my third official Soulja Boy remix.

Soulja Boy - Pretty Boy Swag (DJ 0.000001 Remix) ft. Dire Straits by magicalbass

I would also like to share these - two of the most ridiculously bad rap songs ever, IMO:

New Toilet Seat + New Interview w/ Th' Mole

That's right, ladies... you're looking at my brand new toilet seat!

(Brand New Toilet Seat also happens to be the name of my 12-piece jazz/funk/soul/swing fusion band.)

Anyway, below is a link to a very nice article/interview with me in which I reveal some previously undisclosed information on the mysterious Mole Consciousness theory, etc.

OH YAY! Th' Mole: Do Not Be Afraid is out!!! :) :) :) !!!!!!!!!!!!

Th' Mole is tough to pin down. Hopping between musical styles, record labels, costumes, and even stage names (see The Mole, DJ 0.000001, Captain Daydream, etc.), it seems that his only dedication is to innovation, with an utter disregard for tradition. The wide range of themes running through his new album, Do Not Be Afraid, include magic, sex, death, surveillance, and motivation, to name a few, while the music includes elements of nearly every genre known to man, from Chinese folk to dubstep.

Beginning with the explosive and intricately complex instrumental, "Spell To Kill Cancer", Do Not Be Afraid immediately shines a spotlight on Th' Mole's production skills. As opposed to past releases, the album is entirely self-produced, and nearly half of its running time is vocal-free, showcasing his impeccable drum programming, masterful sample manipulation, and progressive arrangements. "Go Horsie" is a driving, jacked-up dance song designed to make the listener move, with Th' Mole yelling, "You and me gonna dance tonight, or else we're gonna f___ing fight!" The electro-rock-rap of "I Love Unicorns" continues the high octane energy as Th' Mole proudly tramples on the concept of traditional masculinity.

The momentum of the album rarely slows as the listener is taken on a rollercoaster ride through Th' Mole's wild universe, from the jaded look at romance of "I'm Feeling Feelings" to the mystical rap gibberish of "Shocky Guy Go" to the accordian-based "Goodbye Forever". The enhanced CD version also includes the endearingly scrappy home-made music video for "Go Horsie" as well as a nice and dark 8-bit dubstep remix of "Bouncy Ball" by Murdasloth.

As varied as Th' Mole's music is, ranging from beautiful to harsh, funny to sad, literal to abstract, there does seem to be a common thread running through it. As the album title suggests, Th' Mole has a message of hope. Despite the chaos and negativity of the world, there is solace to be found in the unknown and in the boundless creativity of the human psyche. He implores us in the CD liner notes to "Stand proud in the chaos and the fog, and smile wide as you plunge into a future that you will help to create. Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. And above all, Do Not Be Afraid."

Mutant Lemming Attack - new Mole acapella

This is a preview of a track from an upcoming collaboration project between myself, Ira Lee, and producer Francis Estevez (ex-Binary Audio Misfits).

Mutant Lemming Attack (Acapella) [112BPM] by thmole

Lyrics:

we r tiny - growing bigger
w/ tiny fingers on tiny triggers
ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-tah
in unison we break dem law
little fists n little boots n
little reason not to shoot
we r friends and we like peace n
if we're pushed we kill to keep it

with tiny fists and tiny fingers
tightly gripping tiny triggers
ha hahaha ha haha ha
in unison we break dem jaw
little voices, little amplifiers
little fires make bigger fires
we r friends and we like peace n
if we're pushed we kill to keep it

dwarfed from the start - grew hardly at all - from my
limited perspective all i saw was a wall - and the
more i looked around all the more that i found other
puny people sick of being stuck on the ground - so now we're
knocking it down - we're knocking it down
it's all toppling now

it's a
lemming attack - we want the world back - we been
driven by fear and it brought us here, to the
edge of a cliff, and now we're moving away from
it - and someone's gonna pay for this - been
knocking too long, stuck in the cold so we're
chopping it down, moving up, tally-ho
knock knock knock - chop chop chop -
creak, snap, drop and we're walking on top of
it

with
tiny fists and tiny fingers
powered by a force of massive hunger
massive pressure, massive danger
massive hearts and massive anger
by the kindness of strangers we
rearrange the hoo-ha that hatred breeds
the plan wasn't written - it simply hatched - it's a
natural to reaction to bite the hand that slaps

this is not about vengeance - it's about freedom
you may see us hand in hand but you can get between em
and watch a angry face turn into a smiley face
or keep your back turned and keep your boots tightly laced

you're with us or you're dead

we r tiny - growing larger
w/ tiny fingers on tiny chargers
ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-tah
in unison we change dem law
little fists n larger plans n
not afraid to take a chance
we r friends and we like peace n
if we're pushed we die to keep it

with tiny hands all linked together
we're gonna swim or sink together
ha hahaha ha haha ha
in unison we fix dem flaw
little voices, little amplifiers
little fires make bigger fires
we r friends and we like peace n
if we're pushed we die to keep it

dwarfed from the start - grew hardly at all - from my
limited perspective all i saw was a wall - and the
more i looked around all the more that i found other
puny people sick of being stuck on the ground - so now we're
knocking it down - we're knocking it down
it's all happening now

Th' Mole circa 1999: TURBO PUNX

so back in the olden days, when Magical Bass was called Motion Recordings, about 12 or 13 years ago, i created a project called Turbo Punx - it was just me (with a couple guest vocalists), but i promoted it as a 3-member band.  the concept was electronic punk rock.  to this day i think it sounds pretty different, even though there are quite a few electro-punk acts out now.  Beverly Fre$h just mentioned to me that his Turbo Punx CD is getting worn out, so i decided to put it online.  hope you like it.  the cover art above was a one-of-a-kind hand-made version done by Drew Slum, and it was apparently scanned and uploaded to the internet by the person who bought the CD, cause i just found it on google.

DJ 0.000001 - How To Edit A Drum Loop

From the forthcoming Institutionalized maxi-single, DJ 0.000001's "How To Edit A Drum Loop" proves once and for all that he is really good at chopping up drum samples.

The Institutionalized maxi-single features DJ 0.000001's very first VOCAL appearance, covering the classic "Institutionalized" song by Suicidal Tendencies, as well as another exclusive track, and possibly a remix by a special surprise guest.  Coming like next week, I think, to http://thmole.bandcamp.com.

Lxor - Arcane Scriptings

Sorry it's been a while since I updated this blog thing.  I actually got in trouble with Johnny Law and had to hide out in the woods for a couple weeks.  Okay, that's slightly misleading.  I went camping in the forest, and also happened to stumble into a little misdemeanor while I was there.  Anyway, it looks as though Th' Mole may have to stand before a federal court soon.  What a badass rebel I am, huh?

Anyway, this album I'm presenting has nothing to do with me, except I think it's good and I recommend it to anyone that likes crazy fast alien weirdo rap.  More stuff soon.

Introducing... DJ 1 Billionth! The Cat Who Can DJ!!!

This is really cute...  DJ 0.000001 taught his cat how to DJ.  The little kitty's mixing is definitely not in the same realm as DJ 0.0000001's - you won't hear any exclusive songs or remixes like you're used to hearing on the Magical Bass show - but still, DJ 1 Billionth is a pretty decent selector for a cat.  Check out his very first mix, "Hello. I Am A Cat That Can DJ"...

Track list:
1. Turf Talk "Get On My Other Shit"
2. New Kingdom "Horse Latitudes"
3. Radioinactive & Antimc "With Light Within"
4. Hi-C "I'm Not Your Puppet"
5. Myka Nyne "First Things Last"
6. MC Shan "Mic Line"
7. Cypress Hill "I Wanna Get High"
8. MC Brains "Oochie Coochie"
9. Unknown Artist "MC Hammer vs. Vanilla Ice"
10. Foxdye "ADD Rave Massive"
11. Warcloud "Falling Hammer"

DJ 0.000001 w/ Foxdye - live on da radio!

From last month's European tour, this edition of the Blunted Library Show features a live recording of DJ 0.000001, mashing it up on-the-fly, along with Foxdye providing blips, squelches and fart noises via her iPod. Beginning with a nice mix by Fred Ficus, the DJ0/Foxdye part starts at about 49 minutes.

And here's a little video of it too.. Sorry it's kinda boring - didn't realize we were being filmed.

Sickrime Komitty, still hating on Th' Mole

I received the message above today from Warkraft of the Sickrime Komitty. These guys just won't quit with their Mole-hating - I don't know what the deal is...  Now they've updated their web site with even more mean anti-Mole "art" - and the word on the street is that they're even working on a music video for their "Fuck Th' Mole" song.  This is just ridiculous.

And a couple days ago I also received this nice little message from Skillsack:

If you haven't heard it yet, here is my triumphant response song to the Sickrime Komitty. Take that, meanies!

New Cocoon:

From Hawaii to the UK, New Cocoon is a vast and growing network of producers, vocalists, instrumentalists, visual artists, web designers and more. Founded by the alien-tongued MC Wormhole and producer Slew in 2005-2006, the loosely organized collective has gradually gained mass, weaving its web across many planes, expanding its expertise to include a large variety of styles and flavors. While the group's focus has remained grounded in hip hop, the future incarnations of New Cocoon are undefined and boundless. Stay tuned...

Migrant Larvae:

The eleven vocal tracks and single instrumental that make up Migrant Larvae run the gamut from molasses slow to lightning fast, with a freaky cast of characters guiding the listener down a dark and weird, winding path. At one turn you're in a fiery pit with Wormhole's rapidfire ranting over Wydow's menacing dubstep beat, and at the next you're on a psychedelic boat ride with the Slew & Brandon Logic's instrumental offering. As varied as it is, each track on the compilation stands on its own, and the album as a whole retains a common thread, with all of its contributors adding to the strange new sound that can only be described as New Cocoon.

Hairdresser Mike!

I was just re-listening to this old album.  I sort of executive-produced this (dug it out of the guy's computer, mastered it, and released it on my label, Motion Recordings) back in 2003.  I think it's a great listen..  a trip inside the mind of a modern day legend, maniac, saint, addict, accidental poet extraordinaire.  The music itself sounds drunk.  Hairdresser Mike lives to this day, doing what he does best, cutting hair and getting in trouble in Hawaii.  Anyway, I uploaded the album - please enjoy: http://www.mediafire.com/?gkeewxa5001bb5k

HOLY MF CRAP - THE GODDARN UNICORNS R BACK

You know you still love unicorns..  you know you're not sick of this song yet.  After you listen to all 13 versions you might be..  but hey...  this new maxi-single is special.  It's not just a bunch of remixes of the same song - it's that and so much more!  It's got a music video, it's got the Th' Mole text-based video game, it's got the grand debut of a never before heard song called "How To Drive", which is the unofficial sequel to my GENIUS song "How To Be Cool".  It's even got a remix of that by Rappy McRapperson which was then chopped and screwed by DJ 0.000001.  It's a conversation piece, it's a status symbol, and it's a sign of shrewd and refined intelligence.  It's a commemorative trophy of the spirit of our age which you can proudly blast into your neighbor's window, your boss's face, your pet snake's ear...  do it.  Spread every version of this song everywhere until it's the ONLY song that ANYONE lisens to EVER AGAIN.  And then, when everyone in the world is playing different versions of "I Love Unicorns" simultaneously, then..  we will have world peace!  Because that's what this is all about, guys. So watch the video for free, listen for free, then pay $5 (or donate more!) to own this beautiful little baby.  And OMG - here is a digital special offer coupon..   just for being here on my personal blog, you get this special treat.  If you buy this thing, I will give you YOUR CHOICE of ANY of my OTHER.  ALBUMS....    (wait........wait..................)    .....  . . .      . . .     FREE!!!!!!!!   that's right.  just buy it (or heck, buy anything for $5 or more), then email me with this secret code in the subject heading: Caca neebo guy Nay nay.  then tell me which release you want and i'll send you a link to download it.  That's awesome, right?  If you're still reading this, I love you.  BUY  BUY BUY BUY

Reggae Mole

There's this sort of reggae/jungle/breakcore remix by 3re of my song "How To Be Cool" (which includes a water bong intro!) on a free compilation from Bludclot Recordings that came out last year.  I hadn't known about it till now..  The compilation is about half dub reggae/dubstep and half jungle.  Features Hot Mess, royb0t and many more.  Smoke your chalice to this, mi bruddah.
